Harvesting Walnuts

When harvesting walnuts you have to ask yourself how your going to pick up walnuts off the ground.  Harvesting walnuts can be tricky, as you are competing with crows and squirrels.
The key to picking up walnuts is to not leave them on the ground for long.  If possible, pick your walnuts from the walnut tree, before the animals get a chance to harvest the walnuts.  Here are the basic steps to harvesting walnuts:

  1. Harvest walnuts in early fall, normally in September and October.
  2. Knock or shake the walnuts from the tree when the hulls are cracked but still intact, or pick them off the ground as quickly as you can.
  3. Remove hulls
  4. Sun dry the shells by spreading them on a tarp allowing them to cure for 2 to 3 weeks.  Kernels will break cleanly when bent, if completely dried.
  5. Store the nuts in a cool, dry area, or refridgerate for a few months.  You can freeze for longer storage.

Many times the tree limbs are too high to reach the ready to harvest walnuts, leaving you to harvest the walnuts off the ground.  Picking up walnuts off the ground can be tiresome and backbreaking.   When harvesting walnuts with the Bag-A-Nut, picking them up is a breeze.  You can do it in minutes, every day, and obtain a peak walnut harvest.
The Bag-A-Nut is a machine (without an engine) that is propelled by slight pressure.  When it is pushed, the patented wheels pick up the walnuts (with husks) and ejects them in a basket.  The size of the width of the wheels is optional; depending on how many walnuts you have to pick up.  The smallest Bag-A-Nut is 16” wide, and the largest is 36”, which can also be pulled behind a tractor, ATV or lawn mower.  Each Bag-A-Nut will pick up an area of 16”, 24”, or 36”.  The Bag-A-Nut will harvest walnuts quickly, requires minimal to no maintenance, and will pay for itself quickly, especially if you sell your harvest.  The Bag-A-Nut is a great investment for harvesting your walnuts.
